Chapter 23 - Lost and Found
A week after the funeral, Cody was recovering and by the end of two months he was over the worst. He had gone out and found himself a job at the auto repair shop. He didn’t know anything about cars, but he figured if Benny Talbot, the dumbest kid in his class could do it, then so could he. He became an apprentice and earned a paltry wage, but it kept him in cigarettes and just about paid the tiny rent on his trailer. The money he made for food, he got from ‘mowing the lawn’ for his to favourite clients and he managed to find two others who were willing to pay top dollar for his services. After long, dirty days in the shop, he could only manage four clients at the weekend.
“I ain’t nothin’ more than a cheap prostitute.” He told Brett one day.
“That ain’t true, Cody. You’re also a good friend.” They both laughed.
“I always loved that giggle of yours, Brett,” Cody admitted.
“Careful now,” Mikey whispered. “That’s my boyfriend you’re flirtin’ with, there.”
“Why d’ya always whisper when you say ‘boyfriend,’ Mikey? Ain’t no one here to hear ya.”
It was true. The town was virtually deserted at night. No one would go out after dark any more, except for the three of them and the few brave workers at Compton’s. The bar only managed to stay open by serving people during the day as well as the two hours they braved at night.
Thirty three people had died of unknown causes. Thirty- three people had mysteriously vanished from their graves. Officer Bill had been called the most useless officer on the force and he had been retired early. Mikey’s mother couldn’t handle the shame, so she had moved in with her sister in San Francisco. Investigations were underway by the newly appointed police officer, a healthy lookin’ rogue of a man with a chest like a barrel and thighs that could kick start a Jumbo jet. James had not been found, but rumours had started spreadin’ that he had killed Bryony and run off for fear of bein’ caught. Mikey never denied the rumours when people asked him and Brett knew that he had started the rumour.
Cody leaned across the table and took Brett’s hand. “Tell me what I’m thinkin’?”
‘I killed my Pops. I dunnit. I should be locked up, but then I wouldn’t hear your laugh and I wouldn’t see your pretty face.’
“Cody, you’re drunk. Don’t think things like that. You know it ain’t true.”
“I’m a drunk like ma Pops.”
His cell phone rang. “Whajja want?...Who? Oh, yeah zhatsh mee. Who you?”
The voice on the other end tried to speak to him, but he cut them off mid-sentence, “wait! Shtobbit. SHUT- THE- FUCK- UP! Good. Now shpeak to ma purdy friend. I cain’t be talkin’ right now.” He handed the phone to Brett.
“Hello?”
Cody started to laugh, so Brett stood up and moved away so he could hear better.
“Cody, lemme get you some coffee. I think you’ve had enough.
